Why I Bloghop

This hop was inspired by my husband’s first sociology essay requirement. He had to write half a page with the topic being simply an open “Why I…”. I’ve been thinking ever since then of all the things there are to write about and how interesting it is to see what our first instincts are to finish that prompt. I’m considering making this a monthly thing. Your posts can be funny or serious, short or long, photos or plain. It doesn’t matter. Share what you are thinking and I can’t wait to read it!

Here’s the guest post from my sweet, adventurous mama:

Why I thought swimming in the Waikiki Rough Water Swim was a good idea.

I live in the Arizona desert but I thought it would be a good idea to see if I could survive a 2.384 mile ocean swim off the coast of Waikiki. The competitors are nationally ranked and world class athletes as well as those who swim in masters swim programs, for the most part. There are a few like me who are a little bit nuts. One day in June, I wondered whether I could, at the age of 45, swim that far in a competitive ocean swim without a personal coach, swim club support, or any training that a reasonable person would assume I would have. I called my brother, Steve, the triathlete who swims in this event every year, and asked his advice. He said, “Go down to the clubhouse pool and see if you can swim 45 laps and then call me.” So I got my suit on, swam 45 laps and called him. He said I had seven weeks before the event and could probably survive. That was enough incentive for me. Since this is a blog about “Why I” and not “What happened” I’ll have to end here. I think it’s always a good thing to take on something that is far above my perceived capability, to stretch my willpower and challenge myself.

Here’s the linkup! Please join me and finish the thought, “Why I…”
